Description:

Oxford Academy’s 2018 Hall of Distinction honorees to be inducted

Oxford Academy’s 2018 Hall of Distinction comprises five Oxford Academy alumni acclaimed in military, business, government, politics,  librarianship, community history, and education. The Friday, July 27 induction ceremony will be at 6:30 pm in the Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

The Oxford Academy and Central School District has named another class of honorees for its Hall of Distinction. Lt. Colonel George Anthony Bancroft II (Class of 1994), Lt. Colonel John Jamieson Bancroft Jr. (Class of 1992), Charlotte F. Stafford (Class of 1936), Barbara H. Tompkins (Class of 1966), and Mary C. Weidman (Class of 1962) were selected by the Hall of Distinction Coordinating Committee following publicly solicited nominations.

These honorees are known for a variety of outstanding contributions: to the broader community by making a difference in the lives of others, to their professions through achievement in their chosen fields, and to the school while students at Oxford Academy.

Their accomplishments reach from the local to the national in influence. Lt. Colonel Tony Bancroft III and Lt. JJ Bancroft Jr. are brothers whose military service has had global impact through flight, leadership, training, and active duty. Ms. Stafford spent decades capturing our area’s history and advancing knowledge through librarianship and teaching. Mrs. Tompkins’s school leadership influenced the entire community’s student  readers, and she continues to influence our region through  community service. Ms. Weidman broke the glass ceiling for women in county politics by being the first female and Democrat to be elected to Chenango County office, and remains its longest-serving clerk.

Oxford Academy and Central School District Superintendent Shawn Bissetta commented:

One look at this year’s honorees in the Hall of Distinction shows the range and depth of achievement by Oxford Academy and Central School District alumni. The individuals being recognized this year have given so much to the community, to our school, and to our country. Their influence is enduring, and it is a privilege to recognize them publicly. We are proud to count them among our own, and we hope our students will notice all that can be achieved after graduation. The school community has a lot to celebrate.

On Friday, July 27 at 6:30 pm, presentations will be made to honorees, or on their behalf to family members, in the Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium, located at 50 S. Washington Avenue, Oxford, NY.

(Reception is at 5 pm, dinner at 5:30 pm, and Induction Ceremony at 6:30 pm.)
