Nationwide Shortage of Milk and Juice Cartons
November 20, 2023

Dear Oxford Academy Families,

As has been widely reported in the news media, there is a nationwide shortage of milk and juice cartons that is impacting states, municipalities, and school districts. Currently, Oxford Academy’s milk company is still able to supply us with our milk and juice in cartons. If in the future cartons are no longer an option due to the shortage in supply, the District will be forced to change how we serve beverages to our students.

To accommodate this situation, the New York State Education Department is allowing milk and juice to be served in individual cups, since the issue is not a milk or juice shortage, but rather a supply chain issue at the factory that makes the containers. Consistent with this approach, in the event cartons are no longer available, Oxford Academy will serve milk and juice using paper or plastic cups. Further, the District recently purchased a significant inventory of cups and lids in advance as well as apple and orange juice cups through a second vendor. This is to ensure we are proactive in meeting compliance with NYSED’s recommendations.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this unforeseen circumstance and will keep you updated on any changes that we have in the future.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the Food Service Department at 607-843-2025, ext. 1318.

Sincerely,
