5th Grade:

  • ELA:  We are just about halfway through Stone Fox.  We have been working on multiple choice questions, cause and effect, and restating and answering.  Students did well on their vocabulary tests this week.  We will have another list of words that goes with our unit next week.  Then we will focus on a review vocabulary list.

  • Social Studies-Students are on the “Road to the Revolution”. Students looked at the causes of the French and Indian War and saw the effects that it had on the colonists. They are learning about how the colonists react to laws that are imposed on them without any representation in Parliament. Students will have a vocabulary quiz next Friday, 3/6. Friendly reminder to get America’s Field Trip entries by 3/17. Have a wonderful weekend!

  • Math:  This week, fifth graders learned how to use powers of 10 to convert metric measurements. We discussed how the metric measuring system is primarily used everywhere except the United States, and looked at examples of things we could measure using metric units. This week wraps up our conversions unit! We will be starting our geometry unit next week. The next vocabulary test is on Friday, March 6th. Please encourage your students to study for upcoming quizzes and tests. Have a great weekend!

  • Science is working on the last New York State Embedded Lab.  We are hopeful to finish next week.  We will then move on to Earth and Space Patterns.  I will send the vocabulary list as soon as I have it ready.  The next vocabulary quiz will take place on Friday March 6th.  It will be the last grade for this five week marking period. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

6th Grade:

  • ELA:  Next week 6th graders will have extra homework along with their vocabulary.  We are starting a guided independent reading book called Shiloh.  Students are expected to read a chapter a night and be ready for a quiz the next day.  At the end of the book we will work on an outline form that will count as a test grade.  There will also be vocabulary.

  • Math: The students have been working hard this week learning how to write algebraic expressions.  We are focusing on key vocabulary and learning how to utilize the word wall in the classroom for independent support.  Next week, the students will be writing and solving algebraic expressions using tables and charts.  Have a great weekend!

  • Social Studies-Students completed a review of Ancient India for the final exam 2/27. Students reviewed India’s geography, religion, achievements, politics, economy and their society. Students will have a vocabulary quiz next Friday, 3/6. Friendly reminder to get America’s Field Trip entries by 3/17. If you have any questions, please reach out. Enjoy the weekend!

  • Science is working on Gravity this week.  We began our parachute gravity lab today after our quiz.  We will be moving on to Eclipses next week.  I will send the vocabulary list as soon as I have it ready.  The next vocabulary quiz will take place on Friday March 6th.  It will be the last grade for this five week marking period. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

7th and 8th Grade:

  • ELA 8:  This week in ELA 8, students significantly honed their fundamental language arts skills through focused daily Bell Ringer tasks. Specifically, the tasks involved editing inspirational quotes by the late Kobe Bryant, which provided engaging material for practicing and mastering essential spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules.

  • In terms of literature, we have officially launched into our study of the compelling novel in verse, Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai. This exploration has begun with students immersing themselves in the story of Hà, a young girl fleeing the Fall of Saigon and seeking refuge in America. To ensure a deep and nuanced understanding of the text, students were assigned and are actively working to master a crucial set of vocabulary words drawn directly from the novel, which will be essential for comprehending the rich cultural and emotional context of the narrative.

  • Thank you for your continued support! Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns; email (ncrandall@oxac.org) is the easiest way to contact me.

  • 7th grade Social Studies students will have a unit test next week on government.  They can be reviewing their materials this weekend.  We will be doing a formal review on Tuesday.

  • 8th grade Social Studies students are wrapping up their unit on World War I next week.  They will be writing an essay as their summative assessment.

  • ELA 7:  This week students practiced the skill of determining the meaning of a word by using context clues.  After a few days of in-class instruction and independent practice, students were given a test On Friday.  This aligns with the following NYS Standard:

  • 7L4a: Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word’s position or function in a sentence? As a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.

  • On 2/9 students were assigned their fifth of seven independent reading assignments.  Students must choose a book to read on their own outside of class and will be assessed on their understanding of it on 3/20.  Please encourage your student to read every night.

  • Math 7: Over the past 2 weeks of school students have been learning through real world simulations to better visualize word problems.

  •  Day 1 Simulation: MATHmart: students went shopping in my classroom grocery store to learn how to calculate a subtotal so they could practice calculating Sales Tax.

  •  Day 2 Simulation: The MATHcake Factory: students dined in my classroom food court at 6 different local/ well known restaurants to calculate a subtotal, sales tax and the amount they should leave for Gratuity.

  • Day 3 Simulation: The MATH Locker: students went shoe shopping in my classroom shoe store, where they filled out an invoice that showed an item Discount, a storewide Discount, and sales tax.

  •  Day 4 Simulation: MATHew's Dealership: students acted as car salespeople in my classroom car dealership, where they calculated the amount they would earn on Commission of their sales and then filled out personal checks to earn their weekly paycheck.

  • 7th Grade Science: Having wrapped up our unit on photosynthesis, we are now diving into cellular respiration. Please note:  the next lab make-up session is scheduled for Wednesday, 3/4, from 2:45–3:15 PM.
