Message from the Nurse:  With the warmer weather arriving, please encourage your child to drink extra fluids throughout the day to help prevent dehydration. Bringing a refillable water bottle to school each day is a great way to help students stay hydrated, especially during recess and outdoor activities.

Some common signs of dehydration include:

  • Headache

  • Dry mouth

  • Feeling tired

  • Dizziness

  • Trouble concentrating

  • Muscle cramps

Staying hydrated helps students feel better and stay focused.

  • As required by New York State, students entering 6th grade who are 11 years old or older must have a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) vaccine on file with the school. In addition, students entering 7th grade are required to receive the meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine.

  • If your child will be entering either of these grades this fall, please contact your child's primary care provider to confirm that all required immunizations are up to date. Providing updated immunization records before the start of the school year will help ensure compliance with New York State requirements. Please submit updated vaccination records to the school nurse as soon as they become available.

5th Grade:

Roberson Museum

  •  ELA: Our fifth graders have officially finished their final novel of the year! With the last quiz behind them, students are transitioning to their final project. For the next week, we will be working in class to design comprehensive book jackets for Freedom Crossing. We look forward to displaying their hard work on their lockers for everyone to see during Showcase Night.

  • Social Studies: Our 5th graders took a deep dive into the Bill of Rights this week! Instead of just memorizing amendments, students became real-world legal detectives—analyzing everyday scenarios to see how these historic laws protect us today. We wrapped up our week preparing for the ultimate challenge: The Constitutional Final on June 10. Have a wonderful weekend!

  • Science is done with vocabulary quizzes for the school year.  We visited Roberson Museum and Science Center yesterday.  The students did a nice job.  Each student received a free family pass to go back to the museum with you.  We are currently working on inquiry projects to display in the Showcase Night later this month.  On Monday, the 5th Graders will be taking a trip to Preston Pride Park to release our trout.  The trip will take place during the school day and we will be back for lunch.  Please have your child wear pants and boots as it may be muddy and or buggy.  Mariah Schlutz from NYS DEC will be there to speak on Conservation. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

6th Grade:

Kopernick Science Center

  • ELA: Our sixth-grade class has successfully completed our final shared novel of the year. Following their last quiz, students are now diving into their end-of-year project. Over the next week, they will be working in class to create original book jackets inspired by Wonder. Be sure to look for their finished designs displayed on their lockers during Showcase Night!

  •  Math: The students are working hard to design and construct their 3D amusement park projects!  The Middle School Showcase Night will be held on Wednesday, June 17th, from 5-7pm at the Middle School.  Food trucks such as Cruz's Mexican Food Truck and The Outpost will have food available for purchase.  Please join us for a fun night to celebrate our students' work!

  • Social Studies:The 6th grade classrooms transformed into the ancient world as students kicked off an epic review project on Ancient Rome! We traveled back in time to explore Rome's geography, religion, major achievements, politics, economics, and society, building The Colosseum. They are working hard to conquer their upcoming Ancient Rome FINAL on June 11. Have a fantastic weekend!

  • Science is done with vocabulary quizzes for the school year.  We visited Kopernik Observatory and Science Center on Tuesday.  The students did a nice job.  We are currently working on finishing up the NYS Lab.  We will then be working on our Design Technology Project to display in the Showcase Night later this month.  Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

7th and 8th Grade:

  • ELA 8:   In ELA this week, students engaged in a sensory exploration of foods featured in the novel Inside Out and Back Again. The tasting experience included fresh and dried papaya, chili salt, and nuoc mam—a traditional Vietnamese fish sauce consisting of soybeans, water, and salt. As they sampled these items, students utilized a structured note catcher to record their specific sensory observations, connecting their personal experiences to the narrative descriptions in the text.

  • The final IXL ELA Snapshot for the year is complete. I am immensely proud of the students' consistent dedication and hard work throughout this assessment period, as the data reveals that most have shown truly phenomenal growth in their literacy skills.

  • The classroom focus has now shifted toward the final Independent Reading Project. This major assignment, which carries a double weight summative grade, requires students to demonstrate a deep understanding of their chosen text and is due on June 12.

  • Please don’t hesitate to contact me at ncrandall@oxac.org with any questions. Thank you for your continued support!

  • 7th Grade Science:  The science final exam is scheduled for June 17th and will be completed during class.  A study guide is now available on Google Classroom. Please check your email for further information.

  • 8th Grade Science:  students are beginning a culminating Passion Project. Detailed directions, rubrics, and examples are already available on Google Classroom. Presentation of projects will be completed in class and will begin on Friday, 6/12.  Please check your email for further information.

  • 7th and 8th graders: Please remember to bring back your Social Studies textbooks.

  • 7th grade Social Studies are starting the last summative assessment of the year.  They will be working on an essay about westward expansion this next week.

  • 8th grade Social Studies students have wrapped up their unit on the Cold War.

  • Spanish 7 Grades recently finished their "Tiempo Libre" unit, where they learned to discuss their hobbies and free-time activities. To wrap up the unit, students created a video completely in Spanish to showcase their speaking skills, and I am incredibly proud of the creativity and language growth they demonstrated in their projects.

  • Spanish 8 grades are fully focused on reviewing and practicing for their upcoming cumulative assessments. Please help them stay on track at home, as their written final exam is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, followed by their speaking tests on Wednesday, June 10, and Thursday, June 11.

  • Thank you so much for your continued support and encouragement at home!

  • ¡Gracias!
