5th Grade:

  • 5th Grade ELA:

  • Organization Skills: Students are continuing to develop their organizational habits. A few students would benefit from reviewing their homework calendars daily to keep track of upcoming assignments and due dates.

  • UDHR Unit: This week, students engaged with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by reading and highlighting key concepts. Next week, we will conclude this unit by reading a short article, followed by a class discussion identifying instances where human rights were not upheld.

  • Assessment: Students will take a unit quiz next week covering the various UDHR Articles studied. The core themes from this unit will serve as a foundation for our upcoming novel studies throughout the school year.

  •  Weekly Routine & Reminders

  • Vocabulary Schedule: Homework is assigned Monday through Wednesday, followed by vocabulary quizzes on Thursday and Friday.

  • Independent Reading Outlines: Due October 8th. (Several students have already shared their drafts for review!)

  •  5th Grade Social Studies- We have had an incredible week in 5th grade building our map skills! Students learned how to compare physical maps, which show off natural landscapes, with political maps, which highlight boundaries like states and countries. We wrapped up our busy week by taking our first vocabulary quiz and enjoying a thoughtful Purposefull People character lesson on Respect. Ask your child to show off their map expertise at home this weekend!

  • 5th grade math we converted measurements within the metric system. We practiced converting kilograms to milligrams, liters to centiliters and meters to centimeters. We showed work and our thinking when multiplying 4 and 5 digit numbers to 1 digit numbers. Your 5th grader has been working really hard! Math fact fluency will help tremendously when multiplying by 2 and 3 digit numbers next week.

  • 5th Grade Science is working on Water in Our World.  We will continue to explore what makes water healthy or unhealthy as we focus on the hydrosphere.  We will continue next week.   The vocabulary quiz will take place on Wednesday September 30th.  Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

6th Grade:

  • 6th Grade ELA:

  • Homework Routine: Students did a wonderful job transitioning back into our homework routine this week!

  • UDHR Unit: In class, students reviewed and highlighted essential information from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Next week, we will wrap up the unit by connecting these concepts to two familiar texts (Esperanza Rising and Freedom Crossing), analyzing and discussing where human rights were denied.

  • Assessment: Students will have a unit quiz next week on the UDHR Articles studied. These human rights concepts will continue to weave through our novel studies this academic year.

  • Weekly Routine & Reminders

  • Vocabulary Schedule: Homework is assigned Monday through Wednesday, with vocabulary quizzes on Thursday and Friday.

  • Independent Reading Outlines: Due October 8th. (I have already begun reviewing early submissions with students!)

  • 6th Grade Social Studies- It has been a high-energy week of big ideas in 6th grade as we explored what social studies is all about! Students stepped into the shoes of historians by discussing perspective, spotting bias, examining reliable sources, and diving into a lively debate on fact vs. opinion. We capped off our great week with our first vocabulary quiz and a meaningful Purposefull People lesson on Respect. Please note that students will have an assessment on everything we learned this week on Tuesday, September 29. Ask your student to share one new idea they wrestled with as they prepare!

  • 6th Grade Math: The students have been working hard solving real-world ratio problems.  They are using tape diagrams, double number lines, ratio tables, and graphs to represent equivalent ratios.  Please continue to look over the study guides on Thursday evenings to help your child prepare for Friday quizzes. Next week, we will begin to solve more complex word problems.  Have a great weekend!

  • 6th Grade Science is working on reviewing the water cycle as we continue to explore thermal energy.  We will continue next week.  The vocabulary quiz will take place on Wednesday September 30th.  Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

7th and 8th Grade:

  • 📚 ELA 8: Another Great Week of Learning!

  • It was another busy and exciting week in ELA 8! Students have been working hard, building important skills, and settling into our routines for the school year.

  • ✏️ Bell Ringers
This week, students practiced identifying and using homophones as well as editing sentences. We are also continuing to work on the importance of using our best handwriting and taking pride in the work we put on paper.

  • 📖 Vocabulary
Students kicked off our Anchor Terms 1 vocabulary list this week! Each Monday, students will receive 10 important ELA vocabulary words. Throughout the week, they will complete fun and meaningful activities to help them learn and remember the words. The week wraps up with a vocabulary quiz on Friday.

  • This will be our vocabulary routine throughout the school year, so students will have plenty of opportunities to build their vocabulary and strengthen their ELA skills.

  • 📚 Independent Reading
We also completed our first Independent Reading Book/Page Check this week! Students shared information about the books they have chosen and had the opportunity to tell the class a little about what they are reading.

  • A reminder that students should be reading for at least 30 minutes each day. Reading progress will be checked weekly through our page checks. Our next page check will be Thursday, October 1st.

  • Thank you for encouraging your student to read at home and for supporting their learning! Your partnership makes a difference.

  • As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns at ncrandall@oxac.org. I look forward to another great week of learning with your students!

  • Math 8:   we've started diving into the world of exponents.

  • ELA 7:  This week ELA students continued our writing unit.  We revisited writing terms such as complete sentences (requiring a subject and predicate) and ways to avoid writing errors like sentence fragments and run-on sentences.  Additionally, students reviewed the four types of sentences in language (declarative, imperative, interrogative and exclamatory) and in which situations do you use the conjunctions because, but and so.

  • Students learned about the importance of using appositives and subordinate conjunctions to enhance the complexity of sentences in which they write.

  • Students were assigned their first independent reading assignment of the school year.  Students must decide on a book to read by 9/30.  The book chosen must be a minimum of 200 pages. The in-class assessment is scheduled for 10/30.

  • 7th grade Social Studies students are learning about the impact of exploration using cause and effect.

  • 8th grade Social Studies students have been learning about the Civil War.

  • Math 7- This week we continued to work with multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals. We also began reviewing ratio and rate problems, and took our first quiz on essential review material from 6th grade. Have a great weekend!

  • 7th Grade Science:  Students are currently exploring the scientific method and learning about experimental variables. Be sure to ask your student about our milk and vinegar lab! Vocabulary words are available on Google Classroom. Students can print them out or create flashcards to prepare for our weekly Friday quizzes.

  • 8th Grade Science:  Students are working on a NYS-required laboratory activity, which should be completed by the end of next week. If your student is absent or needs additional time to finish, they will need to work on it in my room during lunch. Please note that Vocabulary Quiz #2 is scheduled for Friday, 10/2.
